Only £11 to have a good steak in London? No way!
If you tell S that you can get a quality steak in the central of London for only £11, S would definitely think you’re joking! However, Flat Iron somehow manages it! The branch S visited was the one in Convent Garden, and it is located on the same street as the famous Taiwanese dumplings restaurant – Din Tai Fung.
It’s mostly walk-in only for Flat Iron, and the Golborne Road is the only branch which is available for online reservation. The wait wasn’t too bad on the day S visited since it was only 15 mins wait, however, S overheard the waiting time was an hour when S left the restaurant. There is a bar area for the customers who choose to wait inside. Yet you can also choose to walk around to pass the time and the restaurant will send you an SMS once the table is ready. Moreover, you can also see the butcher cut up the beef through a big window inside in the restaurant.
There is no menu on the official website, therefore, S took a picture from the outside of the restaurant. The steak is set at a fixed price of £11, and there is some special beef each day which will be written on the wall in the restaurant. The day S visited had wagyu beef on the board as the special.
The cutlery with the little butcher knife is the signature of Flat Iron. It was really cute but it was not so great to cut the steak, S guessed that’s why the restaurant cut the steak for the customers. Furthermore, every table had a mug of salty popcorn as a snack before the steak was served.
The meal came relatively fast considering how packed it was in the restaurant. The leaf salad was quite simple with vinaigrette dressing but it was still lovely. The steak was perfectly cooked for medium rare and cut perfectly, it made S feel surprised how tender and juicy the beef was for only £11!
You can also get a free salted caramel ice cream by your receipt after you finish your meal. The salted caramel ice cream with chocolate shavings was an awesome ending for a nice steak. However, it seems only the branch at Convent Garden has the ice cream but not at other branches. Therefore, don’t feel weird if you don’t get the ice cream when you visit other branches.
The only downside is that you’ll always have to wait a bit before you can get a table, but the table turnover speed is quite fast. However, with the price, location and the quality of the food, S says it definitely worth the wait! If you’re just around the area, you should really give it a try!
