A hidden gem of Bangkok-style street food in Didsbury.
S was looking for some authentic Bangkok street food in Didsbury, and she found here – Jarern Kitchen. This place is located on the edge of Didsbury Village which is probably quite difficult to notice if you don’t walk down to the end of the village. However, it was lucky that S walked pass this place when she was trying out Foster Fish & Chips.
The decor inside was pretty Thai and cosy. There were enough seats and comfortable space between each other. The owner was really friendly and smiley, and the service was really efficient as well.
Since you can find the standard menu on their website, S will just post the lunch set menu here which is not on the website. It was quite good value for a lunch menu since you can get 2 courses for only £9.95! Hence, the lunch menu was the one S tried that day! Thai spicy soup, grilled pork were the starters and the mains were Thai red curry and Pad Thai. Furthermore, honey duck (£11.5) was added as an addition dish.
Firstly, the grilled pork was really lovely, especially with the sauce which gave the marinated pork a bit more flavour. The salad next to it was not just pretty, but also delicious with the dip.
The Thai spicy soup was basically tom yam soup, and the taste was just how it should be. Furthermore, the portion of the stuff in the soup was also quite generous which was filled with chicken, mushroom, spring onions etc.
Since S was amazed by having Pad Thai the first time in Ting Thai Caravan in Edinburgh, S decided to try out all the Pad Thai in every Thai restaurants! Compared to the one S had last time, it was not as salty and it didn’t have the spice on the top. However, the taste was still pretty much the same as S remembered, and it was pretty awesome.
The honey duck was really crispy and it was a perfect fit with the honey sweet sauce and fried garlic on the top. The vegetable next to it was a bit cold and didn’t have much flavour, but it was good to dip it with the sauce.
S was debating between green curry or red curry, since S prefers less coconut flavour in general, and red curry was the one S chose in the end. The curry itself was not spicy but just creamy. There were chicken, bamboo, and some other vegetables in the curry. Moreover, even there was rice which came with the curry, and you can order extra rice if you want to.
Overall, S was really happy that she found this place. Furthermore, the owner of the restaurant is also from Thailand too! It just gives the dishes here a closer taste to the original Thai flavour. If you’re close by or in the neighbourhood, S definitely recommend to come here for some exotic cuisine!
