A hidden gem in Chorlton, it’s sushi marvellous!
S has always tried to discover more independent restaurants to try, and this is another hidden gem that S discovered recently. The restaurant is about 10 mins walking distance from the Chorlton tram station, and it’s quite close to Peck & Yard. It’s not easy to miss since the sign outside is quite obvious.
The restaurant is quite small inside and it only has 7 seats, however, there are some seats outside but not too many. Therefore, if you don’t want to be knocking elbows, you can choose to take away or just order delivery which is also an option. You have to order your food at the counter and pay first, and then the food will be served afterwards.
The menu can be found on their website, moreover, you can pre-order a customised platter if you want something different. S has tried their Salmon Ikura Don(£13), uramaki such as Marvel Surf & Turf (£13), Volcano (£13), Red Dragon (£12), and the salmon(£3.3) and scallop (£4.8) nigiris.
The Volcano uramaki contains salmon, cooked king prawn, avocado, cucumber, finished with a special warmsauce and tobiko. The taste was great, yet S didn’t find it particularly amazing compared to other volcano uramki S had tried before. However, the Red Dragon was absolutely delicious! The taste of seared salmon and unagi eel matched perfectly, and it’s not too salty as well. Since the Volcano and the Red Dragon both have salmon, S would recommend the Red Dragon which has a richer flavour overall compared to the Volcano.
There are king prawns, togarashi, salmon roe and avocado with unagi sauce in the Marvel Surf & Turf. It’s a very refreshing dish compared to the previous 2 dishes. The togarashi gave it a very tiny kick which was not very obvious if you have less sensitive taste buds like S. Yet it was still great but S still preferred the Red Dragon among these 3 uramakis.
Nigiri is S favourite type of sushi, because it’s the purest type of sushi and sometimes simplicity is the best. Both scallop and salmon were very fresh, especially the scallop as you could taste the sweetness from the seafood itself. Considering the pricing and the quality of the scallop, S was really satisfied overall.
Salmon Ikura Don contains salmon, ikura roe, tobiko, avocado with the sushi rice with unagi sauce. The salmon was very fresh, however, the unagi sauce became a bit too salty if you didn’t stir it. The portion of the dish was a decent size, it’s about the same size as the Salmon don from Yuzu.
Overall, S would definitely recommend their nigiris. Furthermore, they also have otoro (rare cut of tuna belly) and wagyu (high quality Japanese beef) if you feel like spoiling yourself a bit. They also just opened another branch in Ancoats which would be easier to visit for the people who live close the city centre.
