Unexpectedly good Greek food in the heart of Manchester
S started to look for some greek food after she tried it at Dimitri’s, and she found Rozafa. Rozafa is just right next to St. Peter Square tram station which is really hard to miss from its typical blue and white greek style theme. S tried their lunch menu and was amazed by the food, therefore, she decided to come here for dinner again and write a proper post for it (yes, it’s THAT good!).
There are some outdoor seating which would be perfect if the weather was a bit warmer, yet the day S visited was a bit too chill to sit outside. The interior is simple and you can get a feeling of Greece the second you enter the restaurant. The staff were friendly and nice, however you should expect a slower pace of service.
The menu S tried that day was their early doors menu that you can get it between 12 to 6:30pm everyday besides Saturday. They also have lunch menu and evening menu which provide more options for you to choose. The early doors menu is £14.5 per person with a starter and a main. The starters S had that day were Keftadakia and Dolmadakia, and the starters here also come with pitta bread and salad garnish. As for the main, since Pastichio(Greek style lasagne) was not ready that day, S had Rosto and Minced Kebab instead.
Keftadakia is basically meat balls made from minced lamb mixed with onions, oregano and mixed herbs. The meatballs absorbed the sauce well and they were super juicy as well. Moreover, the Keftedakia here was cooked in Neapolitan sauce which was perfect to dip the Pitta bread in.
Dolmadakia is a common dish in Mediterranean cuisine. It’s a dish that contained minced lamb, rice, fresh mint, dill and various spice and wrapped with vine leaves. S had never tried it before, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavour of it was quite rich due to the stuffing which was cooked in Neapolitan sauce and lemon juice. Overall, S really liked this dish and would love to have it when S visit again.
S was going to choose Pastichio(Greek style lasagne) but sadly it wasn’t ready. However, the Minced Kebab didn’t disappoint her. The portion was bigger than S thought, and the kebab had more flavour compared to the ones S had before. It was quite a filling dish which was suitable for someone wanting something simple and filling.
Last but not least, the favourite dish from that night – Rosto. It was slow cooked lamb shoulder which was cooked with wine, tomato sauce and various herbs, and S had saffron rice as the side. It was totally mind-blowing how tender the lamb shoulder was, it literally just melted in S’s mouth. Furthermore, the sauce was perfect with the saffron rice. This was definitely the best lamb shoulder S has had so far!
Overall, S would definitely visit again to try more of the dishes! Don’t worry if you’re not in the city centre, they also have another branch in Stockport. If you like some great greek food, Rozafa can be the one on your list to try for sure!
