Pies are one of my staple fridge items as they are great for either a quick lunch or dinner by throwing some extra bits together, and Holland’s pies are the brand I always go for if I spot them. I have known about Holland’s pies since I came to the UK as I was told it’s the best pie you can get from the supermarkets.
To celebrate 170th birthday for Holland’s, I decided to go for a proper Northern styled snack – the Wigan kebab which is a barm cake with a pie inside and you can also add some mushy peas or chips if you want something extra. It was created since it’s difficult for people to have a piping hot pie on the go, so sticking it in a barm is a clever idea. I really love this kind of local specialty which shows a very English way of eating and the story behind it, just like Holland’s which has 170 years history behind the brand.
There’s a huge range of pies and pastries you can choose from; from standard steak to veg and cheese options. I personally recommend the ones with cheese in or a comforting simple steak pie. Don’t worry if you don’t know which one to pick, you can never go wrong with Holland’s.
